    • As pointed out by the author, this book celebrates a double anniversary: it appeared precisely 50 years after the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) by Peter Gorer, and 10 years after the publication of Jan Klein's famous book on the mouse MHC. "Natural history" does not solely refer to evolution only a short section at the very end of the volume is dedicated to this topic.
