This book begins with a tenet and a criticism. The tenet states that (a) most scales in the behavioral sciences are no better than ordinal and (b) ordinal scales are what is needed in most cases of assessment and testing. The criticism states that neither classical test theory nor item response theory are capable of delivering what they promise, that is, interval-level scales.
