Trawling for pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and F. paulensis) catches also large quantities of fish, mostly bony fish, which are discarded, as they have no commercial value. Their composition and abundance were studied in an area that corresponded to the southeastern coastline of Brazil. Ninety one species were registered. Incidental fishing affected mainly small individuals and occured throughout the year. The year round rate of bony fish to shrimp catches was 10,5:1,0. Three…

Seasonality of Ichthyofauna Bycatch in Shrimp Trawls from Different Depth Strata in the Southern Brazilian Coast
ABSTRACT Rodrigues-Filho, J.L.; Branco, J.O.; Monteiro, H.S.; Verani, J.R., and Barreiros, J.P., 2015. Seasonality of ichthyofauna bycatch in shrimp trawls from different depth strata in the southern
The pink-shrimp trawling bycatch in the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil, with emphasis on crustaceans
The pink shrimp trawling fishery in the Ubatuba region acts intensely on the populations of some benthic species, demonstrating that some species may have been overfished.
Ichthyofauna bycatch of the artisanal fishery of penaeid shrimps in Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil
The shrimp trawl fisheries are highly efficient in capturing target species but is an unselective gear that commonly catches untargeted organisms, which are usually discarded due to their small size
Bycatch fauna of seabob shrimp trawl fisheries from Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil
By inventorying the accidental bycatch, this work provides a preliminary step towards defining intervention measures to reduce or make better use of this bycatch in seabob artisanal fisheries and attempted to identify additional threats to vulnerable and endangered species resulting from shrimp trawling.
The bony fishes (Teleostei) caught by industrial trawlers off the Brazilian North coast, with insights into its conservation
A comprehensive inventory of the teleost fishes captured by the industrial outrigger trawling operations off the North coast of Brazil revealed a unique fauna, characterized by 17 endemic species, and a mixture of estuarine-dependent and marine species, mainly associated with coral reefs.
Population explosion of the burrfish Chilomycterus spinosus spinosus (Diodontidae, Tetraodontiformes) in a eutrophic tropical estuary
The population fluctuations of this species coincided with the rainfall pattern; the estuary is used as a nursery area until the fish reach the size at first maturity, which shows their high tolerance to eutrophic conditions, as well as to natural variations in temperature and salinity.
Fish discard by-catch shrimp trawl (rainy season 2013) in south central coast of Veracruz, Mexico
The study of discard composition is a basis to assess the impact generated by the shrimp trawlers and provides guidelines for identify changes in the community structure.
By-catch analysis of Argentinean prawn Artemesia longinaris (Decapoda: Penaeidae) in surrounding area of Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil: effects of different rainfall
One of the most problematic fishing methods in terms of by-catch and discarding is prawn-trawling. This paper analyses the incidental catch of an artisanal trawl fleet during two discrete Artemesia
Trophic Ecology and Ecomorphology of the Shorthead Drum, Larimus breviceps (Acanthuriformes: Sciaenidae), from the Northeastern Brazil
The shorthead drum Larimus breviceps has an important role in the subsistence of local communities. However, studies addressing the trophic ecology of this species are still scarce. Here we present

Estudo sobre a ictiofauna acompanhante da pesca do camarão sete-barbas (Xyphopenaeus kroyeri) nas proximidades da baía de Santos - SP: I - aspectos quantitativos
During the sea-bob shrimp fishery, a large quantity of miscellaneous fishes are caught, of which the most part was discarded in the sea. In this paper, quantitative aspects of this bycatch products
Demersal fish community on the inner shelf of Ubatuba, southeastern Brazil
Fluctuations in the distribution and abundance of demersal fishes collected by otter trawl on the continental shelf of Ubatuba were examined over a two-year sampling period, and the most important one is the Tropical Sciaenid Community, characterized by Ctenosciaena gracilicirrhus, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, and Cynoscion jamaicensis.
Aspects of the biology of the Atlantic Midshipman, Porichthys porosissimus (Teleostei, Batrachoididae): an important by-catch species of shrimp trawling off southern Brazil
This paper demonstrates results obtained in studies of the size and age of first sexual maturity for some of the more important commercial species landed at Santos, and gives some information about
