In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Ludwig Boltzmann explained how irreversible macroscopic laws, in particular the second law of thermodynamics, originate in the time-reversible laws of microscopic physics. Boltzmann’s analysis, the essence of which I shall review here, is basically correct. The most famous criticisms of Boltzmann’s later work on the subject have little merit. Most twentieth century innovations —such as the identification of the state of a physical system with a…

Generalized Gibbs Entropy, Irreversibility and Stationary States
A generalization of the Gibbs entropy postulate is proposed, based on the BBGKY hierarchy as the non-equilibrium entropy for a system of N interacting particles. This entropy satisfies the basic
Lanford’s Theorem and the Emergence of Irreversibility
It has been a longstanding problem to show how the irreversible behaviour of macroscopic systems can be reconciled with the time-reversal invariance of these same systems when considered from a
Time in Thermodynamics
Or better: time asymmetry in thermodynamics. Better still: time asymmetry in thermodynamic phenomena. “Time in thermodynamics” misleadingly suggests that thermodynamics will tell us about the

Time irreversibility from symplectic non-squeezing NIKOLAOS KALOGEROPOULOS
The issue of how time reversible microscopic dynamics gives rise to macroscopic irreversible processes has been a recurrent issue in Physics since the time of Boltzmann whose ideas shaped, and
Reviving frequentism
Philosophers now seem to agree that frequentism is an untenable strategy to explain the meaning of probabilities. Nevertheless, I want to revive frequentism, and I will do so by grounding

TLDR
This book is a field guide to recent work on the foundations of statistical mechanics and quantum information theory and a primer for philosophers.
On the law of increase of entropy for non-equilibrium systems
Under the assumption of a smooth full phase-space distribution function we prove that the non-equilibrium entropy S which is considered as a functional of the distribution vector for an N-body system
Typicality analysis for the Newtonian N-body problem on in the limit
A two-dimensional version of the classical Newtonian N-body problem is studied in which N identical particles move on the two-sphere and interact mutually with an attractive logarithmic pair
