Renal responses to atrial natriuretic peptide were examined in conscious dogs with congestive heart failure (tricuspid insufficiency) and in conscious rats with nephrotic syndrome (adriamycin). Heart-failure dogs displayed elevated atrial pressure and heart weights, blunted natriuresis to a saline load, and ascites.
