We present a systematic literature review of cryptocurrency and blockchain research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) published between 2014 and 2021. We aim to provide an overview of the field, consolidate existing knowledge, and chart paths for future research. Our analysis of 99 articles identifies six major themes: (1) the role of trust, (2) understanding motivation, risk, and perception of cryptocurrencies, (3) cryptocurrency wallets, (4) engaging users with blockchain, (5) using…

Supporting Interface Experimentation for Blockchain Applications

There is an increasingly diverse range of smart-contract blockchains on which decentralized applications (dApps) are built. However, HCI research has so far failed to address them, focusing primarily

Implementation and Evaluation of a Point-Of-Sale Payment System Using Bitcoin Lightning

Cryptocurrencies have the potential to improve financial inclusion. However, the technology is complex to understand and difficult to use. Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) can play a vital role in

Trust-Building Effects of Blockchain Features - An Empirical Analysis of Immutability, Traceability and Anonymity

TLDR
A scenario-based experimental study that analyzed the trust-building effect of three technological features (immutability and traceability of information as well as an anonymous use of the technology) which can be found in current blockchain implementations shows that immutabilityand traceability positively and anonymity negatively influence trust in technology.

A Survey of State-of-the-Art on Blockchains: Theories, Modelings, and Tools

TLDR
A thorough survey of state-of-the-art blockchain surveys published in the recent 5 years is performed by identifying and classifying the most recent high-quality research outputs that are closely related to the theoretical findings and essential mechanisms of blockchain systems and networks.

Making Sense of Blockchain Applications: A Typology for HCI

TLDR
There is a unique role for the HCI community in linking the design and application of blockchain technology towards lived experience and the articulation of human values, as well as core conceptual and methodological challenges for HCI researchers beginning to work with blockchain and distributed ledger technologies.

The Challenges and Trends of Deploying Blockchain in the Real World for the Users’ Need

TLDR
It is proposed that blockchain practitioners should design blockchain applications from users’ perspective, think about who the users are, and what they need, and lay out possible future trends for blockchain based systems.

Examining Usability Issues in Blockchain-Based Cryptocurrency Wallets

TLDR
The results reveal that both wallets lack good usability in performing the fundamental tasks which can be improved significantly, and point out the aspects where the issues exists so that improving those areas can result in better user experience and adoption.

Visualization of Blockchain Data: A Systematic Review

TLDR
A systematic review of visual analytics tools used for the analysis of blockchains-related data looks at which aspects of blockchain data have already been explored and point out areas that deserve more investigation in the future.
