BLACKHEAD disease of bananas was described by Ashby1 as occurring in Jamaica in 1915 and being caused by a nematode, identified by Cobb2 as Tylenchus similis Cobb, now renamed Radopholus similis. It was not sufficiently serious on the Gros Michel variety in 1942 to be listed by Martyn3 among the banana diseases of Jamaica.
