A bstractIn this paper we propose that bubbles of AdS within Minkowski spacetime, stabilized at a finite radius by stiff matter and an electromagnetic gas, can be an alternative endpoint of gravitational collapse. The bubbles are horizonless with a size up to 12.5% larger than their Schwarzschild radius depending on their charge. We argue that they are stable against small perturbations, and have thermodynamical properties similar to those of real black holes. We provide a realization of the…
Dark bubbles: decorating the wall
Motivated by the difficulty of constructing de Sitter vacua in string theory, a new approach was proposed in arXiv:1807.01570 and arXiv:1907.04268 , where four dimensional de Sitter space was
Dynamics and observational signatures of shell-like black hole mimickers
We undertake the task of studying the non-linear dynamics of quantum gravity motivated alternatives to black holes that in the classical limit appear as ultra-compact shells of matter. We develop a
Observational signatures from horizonless black shells imitating rotating black holes
A bstractIn arXiv:1705.10172 it was proposed that string theory replaces Schwarzschild black holes with horizonless thin shells with an AdS interior. In this paper we extend the analysis to slowly
Reexamining the stability of rotating horizonless black shells mimicking Kerr black holes
In arXiv:1705.10172 a string theory inspired alternative to gravitational collapse was proposed, consisting of a bubble of AdS space made up of ingredients from string theory. These ultra compact
Re-examining the stability of rotating horizonless black shells mimicking Kerr black holes

De Sitter cosmology on an expanding bubble
Abstract Constructing an explicit compactification yielding a metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in a UV consistent string theory is an incredibly difficult open problem. Motivated by this issue, as
Dark bubbles and black holes
Abstract In this paper we study shells of matter and black holes on the expanding bubbles realizing de Sitter space, that were proposed in [4]. We construct explicit solutions for a rigid shell of
Sine-Gordon solitonic scalar stars and black holes
We study exact, analytic, static, spherically symmetric, four-dimensional solutions of minimally coupled Einstein-scalar gravity, sourced by a scalar field whose profile has the form of the
UUITP-26 / 19 de Sitter Cosmology on an expanding bubble
Constructing an explicit compactification yielding a metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in a UV consistent string theory is an incredibly difficult open problem. Motivated by this issue, as well as the

Empty Black Holes, Firewalls, and the Origin of Bekenstein-Hawking Entropy
We propose a novel solution for the endpoint of gravitational collapse, in which spacetime ends (and is orbifolded) at a microscopic distance from black hole event horizons. This model is motivated
Smooth Horizonless Geometries Deep Inside the Black-Hole Regime.
We construct the first family of horizonless supergravity solutions that have the same mass, charges, and angular momenta as general supersymmetric rotating D1-D5-P black holes in five dimensions.
Entropy, area, and black hole pairs.
We clarify the relation between gravitational entropy and the area of horizons. We first show that the entropy of an extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole is zero, despite the fact that its horizon
The Black hole horizon as a quantum surface
In previous work it was argued why it is practically inevitable to assume the existence of an S-matrix that describes particle absorption and production by a black hole, and the relationship between
Extremal limits and black hole entropy
Taking the extremal limit of a non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole (by externally varying the mass or charge), the region between the inner and outer event horizons experiences an interesting
Brane-antibrane systems at finite temperature and the entropy of black branes
We consider D-brane--anti-D-brane systems at T > 0. Starting at the closed string vacuum, we argue that a finite temperature leads to the reappearance of open string degrees of freedom. We also show
Black Holes and Thermodynamics
A black hole of given mass, angular momentum, and charge can have a large number of different unobservable internal configurations which reflect the possible different initial configurations of the
Stable gravastars—an alternative to black holes?
The 'gravastar' picture developed by Mazur and Mottola is one of a very small number of serious challenges to our usual conception of a 'black hole'. In the gravastar picture there is effectively a
The stretched horizon and black hole complementarity.
Three postulates asserting the validity of conventional quantum theory, semiclassical general relativity, and the statistical basis for thermodynamics are introduced as a foundation for the study of
Black holes: complementarity or firewalls?
A bstractWe argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) Hawking radiation is in a pure state, (ii) the information carried by the radiation is emitted from the region near the
