We study the microstates of the ``small'' black hole in the 1/2-BPS sector of AdS5 ? S5, the superstar [1], using the powerful holographic description provided by LLM [2]. The system demonstrates the inherently statistical nature of black holes, with the geometry of [1] emerging only after averaging over an ensemble of geometries. The individual microstate geometries differ in the highly non-trivial topology of a quantum foam at their core, and the entropy can be understood as a partition of N… Expand

Minisuperspace quantization of "Bubbling AdS" and free fermion droplets
We quantize the space of 1/2 BPS configurations of type-IIB SUGRA found by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena (hep-th/0409174), directly in supergravity. We use the Crnkovic-Witten-Zuckerman covariantExpand
The library of Babel: on the origin of gravitational thermodynamics
We show that heavy pure states of gravity can appear to be mixed states to almost all probes. For AdS5 Schwarzschild black holes, our arguments are made using the field theory dual to string theoryExpand
Entropy of near-extremal black holes in AdS_5
TLDR
New decoupling limits in which the field theory of the lightest open strings on the D-branes becomes dual to a near-horizon region of the black hole geometry and a string theoretic resolution of these singularities are suggested. Expand
Massless black holes and black rings as effective geometries of the D1–D5 system
We compute correlation functions in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence to study the emergence of effective spacetime geometries describing complex underlying microstates. The basic argument is that almostExpand
A universal behavior of half-BPS probes in the superstar ensemble
A bstractIn this paper, we probe the typical states of the superstar ensemble of [17] using half-BPS states of type-IIB string theory on AdS5× S5. We find a very simple universal result that has theExpand
Coarse-graining the Lin-Maldacena geometries
The Lin-Maldacena geometries are nonsingular gravity duals to degenerate vacuum states of a family of field theories with SU(2|4) supersymmetry. In this note, we show that at large N, where theExpand
Half-BPS geometries and thermodynamics of free fermions
Solutions of type IIB supergravity which preserve half of the supersymmetries have a dual description in terms of free fermions, as elucidated by the ``bubbling AdS" construction of Lin, Lunin andExpand
Coarse-graining of bubbling geometries and the fuzzball conjecture
In the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) bubbling geometries, we compute the entropies of black holes and estimate their horizon sizes from the fuzzball conjecture, based on coarse-graining on the gravityExpand
Semi-classical probe strings on giant gravitons backgrounds
In the first part of this paper we study two 2 symmetries of the LLM metric, both of which exchange black and white regions. One of them which can be interpreted as the particle-hole symmetry is theExpand
Bubbling AdS and vacuum string field theory
We show that a family of 1/2-BPS states of N = 4 SYM is in correspondence with a family of classical solutions of VSFT with a B-field playing the role of the inverse Planck constant. We show thisExpand
