Black hole growth by accretion
@article{Grupe2004BlackHG, title={Black hole growth by accretion}, author={Smita MathurDirk Grupe}, journal={Astronomy and Astrophysics}, year={2004}, volume={432}, pages={463-466} }
We show that black holes grow substantially by accretion at close to Eddington rates. Using a complete sample of soft X-ray selected AGNs, Grupe & Mathur (2004, ApJ, 606, L41) have shown that narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, as a class, lie below the MBH-σ relation of normal galaxies. Some NLS1s, however, lie on or close to the MBH-σ relation. Here we show that not all NLS1s accrete at close to Eddington rates: those with low L/LEddington are close to the MBH-σ relation, and those with high L…

In this work, we test the hypothesis that narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NSL1s) are active galactic nuclei in their early phase and are therefore younger and more active than the more common…
The Locus of Highly Accreting Active Galactic Nuclei on the MBH-σ Plane: Selections, Limitations, and Implications

We reexamine the locus of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) on the MBH-σ (black hole mass-bulge velocity dispersion) plane in the light of the results from large new optically selected samples.…

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies show extreme properties with respect to the other Seyfert galaxies. Indeed, they are thought to be accreting at Eddington rates and to possess low-mass black…
Revisiting the Black Hole Masses of Soft X-Ray-Selected Active Galactic Nuclei
- Physics

In our previous work, using luminosity and the Hβ FWHM as surrogates for black hole mass (MBH), we compared the black hole masses of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and broad-line Seyfert 1…
BLACK HOLE MASSES OF INTERMEDIATE-REDSHIFT QUASARS: NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY
- Physics

We present near-infrared spectra of 10 luminous, intermediate-redshift quasars (z ≃2; Lbol ≃ 1047 erg s−1), observed with SofI at the NTT of ESO/La Silla. With these rest-frame optical spectra we…
NLS1 galaxies and estimation of their central black hole masses from the X-ray excess variance method

Black hole mass determination in active galaxies is a key issue in understanding various luminosity states. In the present paper we try to generalise the m ass determination method based on the X-ray…
THE Mbh–σ DIAGRAM AND THE OFFSET NATURE OF BARRED ACTIVE GALAXIES

From a sample of 50 predominantly inactive galaxies with direct supermassive black hole mass measurements, it has recently been established that barred galaxies tend to reside rightward of the Mbh–σ…
IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN BROAD ABSORPTION LINE QUASARS AND NARROW-LINE SEYFERT 1 GALAXIES?
- Physics
- 2014
We consider whether broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are similar, as suggested by Brandt & Gallagher and Boroson. For this purpose, we constructed a…

Black Holes of Active and Quiescent Galaxies. I. The Black Hole-Bulge Relation Revisited
