We investigate giant and dual giant type BPS configurations in the near-horizon geometry of a certain (1/16)-BPS AdS5 black hole. By quantising the space of solutions we count the dual giant configurations and compare with the black hole entropy. This suggests a missing degeneracy factor which we argue comes from an angular momentum quantum number. From the D-brane world volume this arises from BPS electromagnetic waves. We study these waves in the context of giants and dual giants in the black…

Entropy of near-extremal black holes in AdS_5

New decoupling limits in which the field theory of the lightest open strings on the D-branes becomes dual to a near-horizon region of the black hole geometry and a string theoretic resolution of these singularities are suggested.

Electrified BPS giants: BPS configurations on giant gravitons with static electric field

We consider D3-brane action in the maximally supersymmetric type IIB plane-wave background. Upon fixing the light-cone gauge, we obtain the light-cone Hamiltonian which is manifestly supersymmetric.

Constituent model of extremal non-BPS black holes

We interpret extremal non-BPS black holes in four dimensions as threshold bound states of four 1/2-BPS constituents. We verify the no-force condition for each of the primitive constituents in the

Counting wobbling dual-giants

We derive the BPS equations for D3-branes embedded in AdS5 × S5 that preserve at least two supercharges. These are given in terms of conditions on the pullbacks of some space-time differential

Near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric AdS(5) black holes

We provide a classification of near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black holes of five-dimensional U(1)^3-gauged supergravity which admit two rotational

Supersymmetric electromagnetic waves on giants and dual-giants

A bstractWe set up the BPS equations for a D3-brane moving in AdS5 × S5 which preserves two supercharges and with all bosonic fields turned on in the world-volume theory.By solving these, we find

Type II Small Stringy Black Holes, Probe Branes and Higher Derivative Interactions

The near horizon geometry of a fundamental string wrapped around an S1 reduced to four dimensions is expected to be AdS2 × S2. A probe string analysis suggests a no-force condition indicating

Comments on 1/16 BPS Quantum States and Classical Configurations

We formulate the problem of counting 1/16 BPS states of = 4 Yang Mills theory as the enumeration of the local cohomology of an operator acting on holomorphic fields on C2. We study aspects of the

This is a review on brane effective actions, their symmetries and some of their applications, and the use of kappa symmetry to determine supersymmetric world volume solitons in flat and curved backgrounds.

Gravity interpretation for the Bethe Ansatz expansion of the N=4 SYM index

The superconformal index of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory counts the 1/16-BPS states in this theory, and has been used via the AdS/CFT correspondence to count black hole

D0-branes in black hole attractors

Configurations of N probe D0-branes in a Calabi-Yau black hole are studied. A large degeneracy of near-horizon bound states are found which can be described as lowest Landau levels tiling the horizon

At the horizon of a supersymmetric AdS(5) black hole: Isometries and half-BPS giants

The near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically AdS5 supersymmetric black hole discovered by Gutowski and Reall is analysed. After lifting the solution to 10 dimensions, we explicitly solve the

Superconformal black hole quantum mechanics

In recent work, the superconformal quantum mechanics describing D0 branes in the AdS2 × S2 × CY3 attractor geometry of a Calabi-Yau black hole with D4 brane charges pA has been constructed and found

BPS electromagnetic waves on giant gravitons

We find new 1/8-BPS giant graviton solutions in AdS5 × S5, carrying three angular momenta along S5, and investigate their properties. Especially, we show that nonzero worldvolume gauge fields are

1/16-BPS black holes and giant gravitons in the AdS5 × S5 Space

We explore 1/16-BPS objects of type IIB string theory in AdS5 ? S5. First, we consider supersymmetric AdS5 black holes, which should be 1/16-BPS and have a characteristic that not all physical

Black holes, black rings and their microstates

In this review article, we describe some of the recent progress towards the construction and analysis of three-charge configurations in string theory and supergravity. We begin by describing the

Charges from attractors

We describe how to recover the quantum numbers of extremal black holes from their near-horizon geometries. This is achieved by constructing the gravitational Noether–Wald charges which can be used

Thermodynamics at the BPS bound for black holes in AdS

In this work we define a new limiting procedure that extends the usual thermodynamics treatment of Black Hole physics, to the supersymmetric regime. This procedure is inspired on equivalent

Superstars and giant gravitons

We examine a family of BPS solutions of ten-dimensional type-IIB supergravity. These solutions asymptotically approach AdS5 × S5 and carry internal `angular' momentum on the five-sphere. While a
