We investigate giant and dual giant type BPS configurations in the near-horizon geometry of a certain (1/16)-BPS AdS5 black hole. By quantising the space of solutions we count the dual giant configurations and compare with the black hole entropy. This suggests a missing degeneracy factor which we argue comes from an angular momentum quantum number. From the D-brane world volume this arises from BPS electromagnetic waves. We study these waves in the context of giants and dual giants in the black…

New decoupling limits in which the field theory of the lightest open strings on the D-branes becomes dual to a near-horizon region of the black hole geometry and a string theoretic resolution of these singularities are suggested.

We consider D3-brane action in the maximally supersymmetric type IIB plane-wave background. Upon fixing the light-cone gauge, we obtain the light-cone Hamiltonian which is manifestly supersymmetric.

We interpret extremal non-BPS black holes in four dimensions as threshold bound states of four 1/2-BPS constituents. We verify the no-force condition for each of the primitive constituents in the

We derive the BPS equations for D3-branes embedded in AdS5 × S5 that preserve at least two supercharges. These are given in terms of conditions on the pullbacks of some space-time differential

The near horizon geometry of a fundamental string wrapped around an S1 reduced to four dimensions is expected to be AdS2 × S2. A probe string analysis suggests a no-force condition indicating

We formulate the problem of counting 1/16 BPS states of = 4 Yang Mills theory as the enumeration of the local cohomology of an operator acting on holomorphic fields on C2. We study aspects of the

The superconformal index of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory counts the 1/16-BPS states in this theory, and has been used via the AdS/CFT correspondence to count black hole
