Invasion of malignant cells requires altered cellular interaction with extracellular matrix. Integrin-type cell adhesion receptors play an important role in this process. Integrin-related cell biological phenomena explain cancer cell migration, and recent developments in the field have made it possible to propose that integrins are also involved in the penetration through basement membranes and other molecular barriers.
