Of all the taxonomic groups of viruses recognized, only the families Rhabdoviridae and Reoviridae include members that can infect either vertebrates or plants (Matthews, 1982). Furthermore, members of both these groups are transmitted by insects, in which they also multiply. The rhabdoviruses have complex bacilliform or bullet-shaped virions composed of RNA, protein, carbohydrate, and lipid.
