}BACKGROUND
The involvement of biogenic monoamines in early ('preneural') embryogenesis has been well documented in lower vertebrates, but much less information is available about the role of these molecules in the earliest stages of development in mammals, including humans.
METHODS
Databases (PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus) were searched for studies relating to biogenic monoamines functioning in early embryos. The available data on the expression of histamine, serotonin and…

- BiologyJournal of proteome research
- 2012
This study is the first reported LC-MS/MS based global proteomic characterization of the uterine environment in any domesticated species before implantation and provides novel information on the temporal alterations in histotroph composition during critical stages for early embryo development and uterine function during the early establishment of pregnancy.
Autocrine embryotropins revisited: how do embryos communicate with each other in vitro when cultured in groups?
- BiologyBiological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society
- 2017
It is argued that group‐cultured embryos are able to promote their own development in vitro by the production of autocrine embryotropins that putatively serve as a communication tool.

- BiologyDevelopmental dynamics : an official publication of the American Association of Anatomists

An updated view of the role of different signaling pathways in the first stages of mouse development is provided, and how their cross‐talk and interplay determine the initial lineage decisions occurring in the blastocyst is discussed.

The results suggest that epinephrine and norepinephrine could affect the embryo development in the oviduct via adrenergic receptors directly and support the opinion that maternal stress can influence the embryo even in very early pregnancy.

Observations provide the first clear evidence that maternal serotonin is involved in the control of morphogenesis during developmental stages that precede the appearance of serotonergic neurons and (ii) serotonin is critical for normal murine development.
