Energy metabolism in halophilic and alkaliphilic acetogenic bacteria

This review summarizes the recent data on the energy metabolism of acetogenic bacteria isolated from saline and soda lakes and considers the adaptation strategies of halophilic and alkaliphilic acetogens to high salinity and high pH values, while also discussing the mechanisms of energy accumulation under auto-and organotrophic conditions.

Different Ionic Specificities of ATP Synthesis in Extremely Alkaliphilic Sulfate-Reducing and Acetogenic Bacteria

The high Na+concentrations and alkaline pH values typical of soda lakes do not predetermine the type of bioenergetics of their inhabitants.

Comparative Study of the Energy Metabolism of Anaerobic Alkaliphiles from Soda Lakes

The Na+/H+ antiport appears to be a universal mechanism of regulating the intracellular pH level and the interaction between the Na+ and H+ cycles in bacterial cells cultivated under alkaline conditions.
