A permanent plot of 30 ha (600 × 500 m2) was established for long-term ecological research on biodiversity and forest functioning in a tropical evergreen forest at Varagalaiar, Anamalais, Western Ghats. This paper gives the results of the first census of trees in the 30 ha plot. All trees ≥30 cm gbh were permanently tagged with sequentially numbered aluminium tags and their girth measured. 148 tree species (in 120 genera and 49 families) were enumerated in a total sample of 13,393 individuals…

Floristic inventory of woody plants in a tropical montane ( shola ) forest in the Palni hills of the Western Ghats , India

Woody plants (≥ 1 cm dbh) were inventoried in December 2004 in a tropical montane (shola) forest in the Kukkal Reserve Forest, Palni hills, India. Twelve randomly placed 30 × 30 m plots were used for

Tree species diversity of a 20-ha plot in a tropical seasonal rainforest in Xishuangbanna, southwest China

Pittosporopsis kerrii of Icacinaceae and Parashorea chinensis were the two most abundant species dominating the emergent layer and treelet layer, respectively, and Compared with other 50-ha plots established in other equatorial regions, tree species richness per ha and tree abundance per ha of the plot were at the moderate level.

Vegetation structure and floristic composition of a tropical dry deciduous forest in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka, India

A permanent 2 ha plot was established for long-term monitoring of plant diversity and dynamics in a tropical dry deciduous forest of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka, southern India and Combretaceae was the most abundant family in the forest.

VEGETATION COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE AND PATTERNS OF DIVERSITY: A CASE STUDY FROM THE TROPICAL WET EVERGREEN FORESTS OF THE WESTERN GHATS, INDIA

The composition, abundance, population structure and distribution patterns of the woody species having a girth at breast height of $ 10 cm were investigated in the tropical wet evergreen forests of

Tree species richness and abundance in a four-ha plot in a mid-montane humid evergreen broad-leaved forest in Gaoligong Mountains of Yunnan province, China

We censused all free-standing trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 1 cm in a four-ha plot in a mid-montane humid evergreen broad-leaved forest in Gaoligong Mountains, Southwest China. A total

Tree stand structure and floristic composition of tropical forests in Garo hills, Meghalaya, North-East India

Fifty-one sampling plots were enumerated in 5.1 ha area in different forest categories and elevations ranging from 100 to 1250 m, for monitoring tree stand structure and floristic composition in

Biodiversity assessment of trees in five inland tropical dry evergreen forests of peninsular India

In all five sites tree species richness and density decreased with increasing girth class, and among the five sites, SP exemplified a mono‐specific dominant tropical forest, with Memecylon umbellatum occupying 69% of the total forest stand density.

Tree growth, mortality and recruitment in four tropical wet evergreen forest sites of the Kolli hills, eastern ghats, India

Range of growth variation in species increased with forest disturbance and conspecifics exhibited variation within and across sites, and Mortality was independent of tree size.

Structure, composition and diversity of tree species in tropical moist deciduous forests of Eastern India: a case study of Nayagarh Forest Division, Odisha

The present study provides baseline data for further ecological studies, forest management, and formulation of site-specific strategies for conservation of biological diversity in moist deciduous forests of Eastern India.

Variation in the kind and richness of species and their abundance is related to human interference and the need for forest conservation is emphasized.

The need for large plots to study vegetation dynamics in tropical vegetation dynamics is discussed, largely due to elephant and fire-mediated damage to Kydia calycina and Helicteres isora.

High tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian Ecuador

This is the highest number of tree species ever recorded for a tropical rain forest sample of this size and in both dbh classes, the most species-rich families were: Fabaceae sensu lato (including Mimosaceae and Caesalpiniaceae), Lauraceae and Sapotaceae; the most Species-rich genera, were Pouteria, Inga and Protium.

SPECIES-AREA AND SPECIES-INDIVIDUAL RELATIONSHIPS FOR TROPICAL TREES : A COMPARISON OF THREE 50-HA PLOTS

The results provide support for the view that within each tree community, many species have their abundance and distribution guided more by random drift than deterministic interactions and demonstrate that diversity studies based on different stem diameters can be compared by sampling identical numbers of stems.

TROPICAL FOREST STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION ON A LARGE-SCALE ALTITUDINAL GRADIENT IN COSTA RICA

Forest inventory data were collected in 1988-89 from permanent plots in undisturbed tropical forest along an altitudinal transect on the northern slope of Volcan Barva, Costa Rica, and species of high-diversity assemblages (encountered at low altitude) were similar in altitudinal niche breadth to species of low-d diversity assemblage (found at high altitude).

The most diverse tree assemblages belong to the semievergreen forest type, which harbours widespread species extensively shared with other vegetation types, which has significant implications for devising a sampling strategy.

On floristic evidence, the forest bounded by the 50-ha plot is a homogeneous example of the Malayan south-central lowland rain forest; long term studies at the site should be of general applicability within Malaysia.
