Abstract Anaerobic biodegradation of atrazine by the bacterial isolate M91-3 was characterized with respect to mineralization, metabolite formation, and denitrification. The ability of the isolate to enhance atrazine biodegradation in anaerobic sediment slurries was also investigated. The organism utilized atrazine as its sole source of carbon and nitrogen under anoxic conditions in fixed-film (glass beads) batch column systems. Results of HPLC and TLC radiochromatography suggested that…

Degradation of atrazine by microbial consortium in an anaerobic submerged biological filter.
TLDR
The results of modeling showed that the Stover-Kincannon model had desirable fitness (R² > 99%) in loading ATZ in this biofilter, which shows that ATZ removal in this system was due to biodegradation.
A comparison of three atrazine-degrading bacteria for soil bioremediation

TLDR
Important differences in the ability of atrazine-hydrolyzing bacteria to degrade this compound in soil are revealed, and it is suggested that the ability to utilize atrazin as a carbon source is important to establish "enhanced degradation" by ecologically meaningful inoculum densities.
Kinetics of atrazine biodegradation by suspended and immobilized mixed microbial cells cultivated in continuous systems.
TLDR
Kinetic results showed that for similar working conditions higher RV, ATZ values and reduced amounts of degradation byproducts of recalcitrant organic compounds could be expected with multi-stage biofilm reactors.
Biodegradation of Atrazine by Bacteria Isolated from Lotic Water
Background: The persistence of toxic herbicides in water and soil has been considered to be potential environmental concern. As atrazine is still used in Nigeria as a major herbicide, a continuous
Bacterial degradation of atrazine in redox potential gradients in fixed-film sand columns.
The purpose of this study was to assess the biodegradation of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] under different redox conditions in the presence and absence of an
Dissipation of atrazine, enrofloxacin, and sulfamethazine in wood chip bioreactors and impact on denitrification.
TLDR
The denitrifier MPN and copy number in sulfamethazine- and enrofloxacin-treated microcosms were less than the control within the first 5 d after chemical addition, whereas the denitrification potentials were not affected, indicating that acclimation of the den itrifier population to the antibiotic or reduced bioavailability over time allowed recovery of the Denitrifiers.
Biodegradation of xenobiotics by anaerobic bacteria
TLDR
For persistent compounds including polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, and DDT, anaerobic processes are slow for remedial application, but can be a significant long-term avenue for natural attenuation.

Degradation and mineralization of atrazine by a soil bacterial isolate.
TLDR
This is the first report of a pure bacterial isolate with the ability to cleave the s-triazine ring structure of atrazine, and it was concluded that this bacterium was capable of dealkylation, dechlorination, and deamination in addition to ring cleavage.

Rapid mineralization of the herbicide atrazine in alluvial sediments and enrichment cultures
The fate of atrazine in sediment sampled from two agricultural watersheds in the Great Lakes basin of southern Ontario was studied in laboratory flask incubations of sediment slurry and enrichment
Kinetics of alachlor and atrazine biotransformation under various electron acceptor conditions
TLDR
Second-order rate constants were developed for the biotransformation of the herbicides atrazine and alachlor under aerobic, nitrate-reducing, sulfate-red reducing, and methanogenic conditions, indicating co-metabolic transformations.
Isolation and Characterization of a Pseudomonas sp. That Mineralizes the s-Triazine Herbicide Atrazine
A bacterium that was capable of metabolizing atrazine at very high concentrations (>1,000 ppm) was isolated from a herbicide spill site. The organism was differentiated by observing clearing zones on
Anaerobic Degradation of Cyanuric Acid, Cysteine, and Atrazine by a Facultative Anaerobic Bacterium
TLDR
A facultative anaerobic bacterium that rapidly degrades cyanuric acid (CA) was isolated from the sediment of a stream that received industrial wastewater effluent and the cell yield was greatly enhanced by the simultaneous presence of cysteine and CA in the medium.
Dechlorination of Atrazine by a Rhizobium sp. Isolate
A Rhizobium sp. strain, named PATR, was isolated from an agricultural soil and found to actively degrade the herbicide atrazine. Incubation of PATR in a basal liquid medium containing 30 mg of
Degradation of atrazine and related s‐triazines
TLDR
The literature related to degradation of atrazine and related s‐triazines is reviewed, with particular emphasis on those substances formed along the degradative pathways and to the biodegradation aspects of mineralization.
