Bioconversion of propionic, valeric, and 4-hydroxybutyric acids into the corresponding alcohols byClostridium acetobutylicum NRRL 527

Abstract

The addition of biogenic (acetate and butyrate) or abiogenic (propionate, isobutyrate, and valerate) volatile fatty acids to theClostridium acetobutylicum growth medium reduced the lag phase. Propionate and valerate were reduced to the corresponding alcohols (l-propanol andl-pentanol). Dicarboxylic acids were not metabolized, but reduced glucose utilization and solvent synthesis. A hydroxyacid, 4-hydroxybutyric acid, was quantitatively converted to 1,4-butanediol.
