Elastin synthesized in response to vascular injury was characterized in terms of its amino acid composition, the biosynthetic labeling of the desmosines and of the heat coacervable polypeptides present in the 2 M urea extract. Neointimal hyperplasia of the chronic variety was induced in rabbit aorta by superficial mechanical lesions.
