Biochemical and behavioral evidence foe hybridization between fire ants,Solenopsis invicta andSolenopsis richteri (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
@article{Meer1989BiochemicalAB, title={Biochemical and behavioral evidence foe hybridization between fire ants,Solenopsis invicta andSolenopsis richteri (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)}, author={Robert Kenneth Vander Meer and Clifford S. Lofgren}, journal={Journal of Chemical Ecology}, year={1989}, volume={15}, pages={1757-1765} }
Behavioral and biochemical evidence is presented for hybridization between the fire ants,Solenopsis richteri andS. invicta. The response of the two species to extracts of their trail pheromones presented as a point source is clearly species-specific; however, hybrid workers responded to parental Dufour's gland extracts and parental workers responded to Dufour's gland extracts of the hybrid. The behavioral evidence for hybridization was confirmed by gas Chromatograph comparison of the Dufour's…

The phylogeography of Reticulitermes termites collected from various parts of France, Spain and Portugal revealed intraspecific differentiation into two major lineages with distinct geographical ranges, and phylogeny based on the analysis of mitochondrial DNA showed its close kinship with the R. grassei lineage occurring in southern Spain.
A Comparative Study between Solenopsis invicta and Solenopsis richteri on Tolerance to Heat and Desiccation Stresses
- Environmental SciencePloS one
- 2014
Testing the hypothesis that S. invicta is more tolerant to heat and desiccation stress than S. richteri found the data strongly support this hypothesis and indicates that cuticular lipids were not the only factors accounting for difference in theDesiccation resistance between these two species.
