Pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) were formerly thought to act as passive pheromone carriers. However, recent studies, particularly in Drosophila melanogaster, suggest that PBPs are involved in the recognition of semiochemicals, thus making ligand-binding studies more meaningful.
