Pasteurella multocida serotype B:2,5, which causes haemorrhagic septicaemia in buffalo and cattle, was examined for the presence of transferrin-binding proteins. An 82-kDa iron-regulated outer membrane protein was found which specifically binds bovine transferrin. In contrast, P. multocida serotype B:3,4, associated with haemorrhagic septicaemia in feral ruminants, did not express transferrin-binding proteins.
