The first neutron star-neutron star merger was detected in by LIGO/Virgo in a galaxy in which the majority of star formation was taking place a long time ago (11 Gyr). LIGO/Virgo estimated that local cosmic NS-NS merger rate is 110-3840 Gpc^-3 yr^-1. Only some extreme evolutionary models can generate NS-NS merger rates in old host galaxies consistent with the LIGO/Virgo estimate. However, we show that these models generate rates exceeding empirical Galactic NS-NS merger rates based on the large… Expand
Merging Rates of Compact Binaries in Galaxies: Perspectives for Gravitational Wave Detections.
We investigate the merging rates of compact binaries in galaxies, and the related detection rate of gravitational wave (GW) events with AdvLIGO/Virgo and with the Einstein Telescope. To this purpose,Expand
R-process enrichment in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies
We study the enrichment and mixing of r-process elements in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). We assume that r-process elements are produced by neutron-star mergers (NSMs), and examine multipleExpand
Neutron Star Mergers Might Not Be the Only Source of r -process Elements in the Milky Way
Probing the origin of r-process elements in the universe represents a multidisciplinary challenge. We review the observational evidence that probes the properties of r-process sites, and address themExpand
The impact of turbulent mixing on the galactic r-process enrichment by binary neutron star mergers across the entire metallicity range
We study the enrichment of the interstellar medium with rapid neutron capture (r-process) elements produced in binary neutron star (BNS) mergers using a semi-analytic model of the evolution of aExpand
Deep ATCA and VLA Radio Observations of Short-GRB Host Galaxies. Constraints on Star Formation Rates, Afterglow Flux, and Kilonova Radio Flares
We report the results of an extensive radio-continuum observing campaign of host galaxies of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The goal of this survey was to search for optically obscured starExpand
Synthetic catalog of black holes in the Milky Way
We present an open-access database which includes a synthetic catalog of black holes in the Milky Way. To calculate evolution of single and binary stars we used updated population synthesis codeExpand
Hadron matter in neutron stars in view of gravitational wave observations
Abstract In this review we highlight a few physical properties of neutron stars and their theoretical treatment inasmuch as they can be useful for nuclear and particle physicists concerned withExpand
Eccentric Binary Neutron Star Search Prospects for Cosmic Explorer
We determine the ability of Cosmic Explorer, a proposed third-generation gravitational-wave observatory, to detect eccentric binary neutron stars and to measure their eccentricity. We find that for aExpand
Constraining delay time distribution of binary neutron star mergers from host galaxy properties
Gravitational wave (GW) observatories are discovering binary neutron star mergers (BNSMs), and in at least one event we were able to track it down in multiple wavelengths of light, which allowed usExpand
Simulating kilonovae in the ΛCDM universe
Kilonovae are optical flashes produced in the aftermath of neutron star-neutron star mergers (NNMs) or neutron star-black hole mergers (NBMs). In this work, we use the Millennium Simulation, combinedExpand

A consistent estimate for gravitational wave and electromagnetic transient rates
Gravitational wave transients, resulting from the merger of two stellar remnants, are now detectable. The properties and rates of these directly relates to the stellar population which gave rise toExpand

The origin of low spin of black holes in LIGO/Virgo mergers
LIGO/Virgo have reported six binary black hole (BH-BH) mergers. The effective spins of all of them are clustered around Xeff=0. However, the effective spin of one of them, GW170104, has an 82%Expand
