Receptive fields of cat retinal ganglion cells were stimulated by a drifting, sinusoidal luminance pattern of fixed contrast. The amplitudes and phases of the harmonic components in the response were determined as a function of spatial frequency. For most cells, the graphs of response vs spatial frequency (when plotted on linear scales) were unimodal and skewed towards zero frequency for all stimulus orientations.
