At 5:00 P.M. on May 17, 1940 a Belgian worker on a bicycle delivered a note to the burgomaster of Brussels, Dr. F. J. van de Meulebroeck. Sent by a German officer in Evere, a suburb to the northeast of Brussels, the note called for the surrender of the city by the burgomaster in person. Compliance with such a request would have effaced the example of the late Adolphe Max, Brussels' burgomaster under the German occupation of 1914-18, whom Dr. van de Meulebroeck had succeeded only six months… Expand
