Behavioural sleep in the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) in a zoological garden
@article{Tobler1996BehaviouralSI, title={Behavioural sleep in the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) in a zoological garden}, author={Irene Tobler and Barbara Schwierin}, journal={Journal of Sleep Research}, year={1996}, volume={5} }
Behavioural sleep was assessed for 152 nights in 5 adult, 2 immature and 1 juvenile giraffes at a zoological garden, using continuous time‐lapse video recording. Sleep occurred while the giraffes were standing (SS) and in recumbency (RS). Paradoxical sleep (PS) was recognized by the peculiar positioning of the head on the croup and by phasic events. The 24‐h sleep profile had a main bimodal nocturnal sleep period between 20.00 and 07.00 hours, with a trough between 02.00 and 04.00 hours, and…

It is suggested that season and parturition are important factors for determining the sleep-related behaviors in giraffes and how these changes in sleep affect other welfare parameters is needed.

It is suggested that the pattern and timing of sleep in the lesser mouse-deer is adapted to the survival of a small herbivorous animal, subject to predation, living in high environmental temperatures in tropical forest undergrowth.

The results suggest that Puppet behavior may be an adaptive form of rest, which may serve a thermoregulatory and anti-predation function, and may be simpler and safer than recumbent rest.

Inactivity/sleep in two wild free-roaming African elephant matriarchs – Does large body size make elephants the shortest mammalian sleepers?
- BiologyPloS one
- 2017
It is found that two wild, free-roaming African elephant matriarchs studied in their natural habitat with remote monitoring were polyphasic sleepers, had an average daily total sleep time of 2 h, mostly between 02:00 and 06:00, and displayed the shortest dailySleep time of any mammal recorded to date.

The results suggest that Puppet behaviour is probably an adaptive form of rest, which serves a thermoregulatory and anti-predation function, and is much simpler and safer than recumbent rest.

The relatively small amount of time spent sleeping by giraffes, can be attributed most directly to the need for constant rumination. This is consonant with the more general ecological notion that…

It was found that it was debatable if cows ever sleep; even at times of total rest they kept their eyes open except for very short periods—a few minutes at most—when they generally rested their heads on the flanks.

Computer simulations demonstrated that the changes of TCRT and EEG slow-wave activity can be largely accounted for by the sequence of the vigilance states, concluding that the photoperiod does not affect the basic processes underlying sleep regulation.
