Mating disruption of codling moth, Cydia pomonella, was studied in apple orchards treated with the main pheromone compound codlemone, (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienol, and a blend of codlemone and codlemone acetate, (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate, a strong pheromone antagonist. Codlemone alone and the pheromone/antagonist-blend had a similar effect on the behavior of males emerging into air-permeated orchards. Male flights within tree canopy and upwind orientation along tree rows were strongly enhanced… Expand

Monitoring Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Apple with Blends of Ethyl (E, Z)-2,4-Decadienoate and Codlemone
Abstract Studies evaluated blends of the pear-derived kairomone ethyl (E, Z)-2,4-decadienoate and codlemone, loaded in gray halobutyl septa, as attractants for adult codling moth, Cydia pomonella L.Expand
Host Plant Volatiles Synergize Response to Sex Pheromone in Codling Moth, Cydia pomonella
TLDR
Plant volatile compounds synergize attraction of codling moth males Cydia pomonella to sex pheromone (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (codlemone) with a strong antagonistic effect when blended in a 1:10,000 ratio with codlemone. Expand
Plant volatile compounds shorten reaction time and enhance attraction of the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) to codlemone
TLDR
Adding R(+)-limonene, linalool, (E)-β-farnesene or ethyl (E, Z)-2,4-decadienoate to codlemone significantly increases the proportion of males flying to the pheromone source in a wind tunnel, and would enhance mating disruption through better engagement of males with dispensers, to the detriment of females. Expand
Dose–Response of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to Ethyl (E, Z)-2,4-Decadienoate in Apple Orchards Treated with Sex Pheromone Dispensers
TLDR
It is suggested that the optimal loading of pear ester for capture of codling moth in mating disrupted apple orchards likely depends on the specific objectives of the monitoring program. Expand
Factors affecting the field performance of an attracticide against the codling moth Cydia pomonella.
TLDR
Although the vertical position of attracticide sources within apple trees had a strong influence on their attractiveness, their horizontal position had none and results of field trials showed that efficacy of the attracticide depends on the population density of the pest. Expand
Developing action thresholds for codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) with pear ester- and codlemone-baited traps in apple orchards treated with sex pheromone mating disruption
TLDR
A high proportion of traps baited with either lure failed to predict low levels of fruit injury at harvest in unsprayed plots regardless of the cumulative moth threshold used during the second moth flight, eliminating the error in predicting fruit injury in plots at mid-season. Expand
Mating disruption of codling moth Cydia pomonella with high densities of Ecodian sex pheromone dispensers
TLDR
Field trials carried out from 2002 to 2004 confirmed the efficacy of Ecodian CP dispensers for codling moth control, regardless of the size of the treated area. Expand
Pheromone pre‐exposure and mating modulate codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) response to host plant volatiles
TLDR
Wind tunnel experiments confirmed that pre‐exposure to sex pheromone codlemone increased the behavioural response of codling moth males to pear ester, which supports the idea that male attraction to the plant volatile pear Ester and sex phersomonecodlemone is mediated through the same sensory channels. Expand
Codling moth management and chemical ecology.
TLDR
Pheromone-mediated mating disruption has become a commercially viable pest management technique and is used to control the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, a key insect pest of apple, on 160,000 ha worldwide. Expand
Antennal and Behavioral Response of Cydia pomonella and Lobesia botrana Moths to Allyl Cinnamate
TLDR
Results suggest that allyl cinnamate acts as a female behavioral modifier, but more assays are required to determine its role in insect communication in field conditions before inclusion in integrated pest management. Expand

Multicomponent Sex Pheromone in Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
TLDR
This study shows that other compounds, in addition to codlemone, are involved in sex attraction of codling moth males, and offers the opportunity to enhance the behavioral activity of current dispenser formulations. Expand
Evaluating Pheromone Emission Rate and Blend in Disrupting Sexual Communication of Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
TLDR
Emission characteristics of 3 sex pheromone components of codling moth, Cydia pomonella, were determined from a polyethylene tube dispenser and a model predicting emission rate of codlemone as a function of accumulated degree hours and temperature was developed. Expand
Codling moth (Cydia pomonella): Disruptants of sex pheromonal communication
In a small section of an apple orchard, six traps were placed each in control and test areas and baited with live virgin female codling moths. Gray elastomer septa were used to dispense communicationExpand
Efficacy of nonpheromone communication disruptants of codling moth (Cydia pomonella): Effect of pheromone isomers and of distance between calling females and dispensers
TLDR
Results show that the previously reported superior disruptant potency (relative to codlemone) of compositions containingcodlemone with a high percentage of isomers was not a result of the proximity of the dispensers to the traps. Expand
Potential of a blend of E8,E10‐120H and E8,E10‐12Ac for mating disruption of codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lep., Tortricidae)
TLDR
Addition of 20% E,E; E,Z‐; Z,E‐ or Z8,Z10‐ 12Ac decreased male attraction to traps baited with E8, E10‐12OH, and the antagonistic effect of each of the four geometric isomers of codlemone acetate was shown. Expand
Pheromone Release by Individual Females of Codling Moth, Cydia pomonella
TLDR
The gland titer and release of sex pheromone was studied in individual Cydia pomonella females and addition of these minor components to codlemone did not increase male attraction to field traps. Expand
Vertical distribution of codling moth adults in pheromone‐treated and untreated plots
TLDR
Results suggest that pheromone dispensers be placed in the upper canopy for optimal disruption of codling moth mating. Expand
Effect of Synthetic Pheromone Permeation on Captures of Male Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Pheromone and Virgin Female Moth-Baited Traps at Different Tree Heights in Small Orchard Blocks
TLDR
A 3-yr study conducted in small apple blocks examined the effect of synthetic sex pheromone permeation on trap catches of male codling moth, Cydia pomonella, finding that the upper canopy edge traps nearly always captured the greatest numbers of male moths. Expand
Antennal response of codling moth males, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), to the geometric isomers of codlemone and codlemone acetate
TLDR
The finding that the receptor neuron type tuned to the main pheromone compound responded even to strong behavioral antagonists aids the interpretation of ongoing behavioral studies for the development of the mating disruption technique in codling moth. Expand
Emission characteristics of a polyethylene pheromone dispenser for mating disruption of codling moth (Lepidoptera : Tortricidae)
TLDR
Differences in evaporation rates for each component changed both the ratio of the pheromone blend inside the dispenser and that released from dispensers over time, and the model did not predict evAPoration rates as well for dispensers placed in full sun or total shade. Expand
