Summary The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is characterized by the complex interplay between invading microorganisms or nonspecific injury (acute pancreatitis, major surgery, trauma or burns) and the uncontrolled release of endogenous pro- and antiinflammatory mediators. Circulating cytokines reduce myocardial contractility and also have profound vasodilating effects.
