Ball State shooting spree kills one , injures four

Abstract

A former Ball State s tudent was killed Sunday m orn ing and four o the rs w ere injured a t a house party a t 1017 West Bethel Ave. Shots w ere f ired into the house, killing Julian Brown, 28, of Gary, who was in the kitchen. Four o th e r gues ts w ere in ju red and admitted to Ball Memorial Hospital. Two have been t r e a te d and r e le a s e d , and two are listed in fair condition, said a hospital spokesman. The fraternity hosted a party e a r ­ lier th a t evening a t the YMCA, 310 E. Charles St., and some partygoers went from th a t p a r ty to the Bethel Avenue party. Keels could not be reached by the Daily News for fu rther comment. Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle added tha t authorities have no reason to su s ­ pect the party was sponsored by the fra ­ ternity. A m an who attended the event said a c a r p u l le d in to a n a l le y b e h i n d th e house and began firing into the home, the AP reported. “I heard gunshots, but I thought it was f i r e c r a c k e r s , ” sa id Ball S ta te j u n i o r Natalie Wcstcrfeld, who lives next to the house. The bullets sounded out in rapid fire, with no sp a ce in be tw een , said ju n io r Kristi White, W esterfeld’s roommate. Winkle said the n u m b e r of shots fired ind ica ted th a t m o re th a n one w eapon was used. Shell casings trailed out from the house into the alley.
