Lactoferrin (Lf) has been shown to have a role in the immune system and in early development of the mouse embryo. A specific receptor for Lf has been suggested to mediate the functions of Lf. We have recently identified a Lf receptor (LfR) in human fetal small intestine. We therefore hypothesized that the mouse homologue of this protein functions as a LfR.
