Vibrio shiloi was reported in 1996 to be the causative agent of bleaching of the coral Oculina patagonica in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the mechanisms of infection and bleaching were studied intensively from 1996 to 2002. Sometime between 2002 and 2004, O. patagonica became resistant to V. shiloi yet continued to bleach seasonally. These findings raised 2 questions: (1) What is the current cause of the bleaching?
