In the Chilean Andes, avalanche risk is often related to mining industry, due to its pres- ence in this mountain range, comparing to other activities. A paradigmatic case is El Teniente mine, the largest underground copper mine in the world, located at southeast of Santiago de Chile, VI Re- gion of Chile. Although the most part of mineral extraction is underground, a lot of facilities and asso- ciated devices are placed on surface, like the town of Sewell at 2.100 m a.s.l., that grew up to 15…

Calibration and application of the MN2D dynamics model to the avalanches of Las Leñas (Argentina)
Abstract. During the winters of 1999 and 2000 large avalanches occurred in the ski resort of Las Lenas (Los Andes, Mendoza, Argentina). On 8 September 1999 an avalanche of new, dry snow ran over a
Using AVAL-1D to simulate avalanches in the eastern Pyrenees
The two friction parameters used in the numerical avalanche dynamics program AVAL-1D, were calibrated empirically with data from observed avalanches in the Swiss Alps. The implementation of the model
Validating numerical simulations of snow avalanches using dendrochronology: the Cerro Ventana event in Northern Patagonia, Argentina
Abstract. The damage caused by snow avalanches to property and human lives is underestimated in many regions around the world, especially where this natural hazard remains poorly documented. One such
Back calculation of the In den Arelen avalanche with RAMMS: interpretation of model results
Abstract Two- and three-dimensional avalanche dynamics models are being increasingly used in hazard-mitigation studies. These models can provide improved and more accurate results for hazard mapping
Dry-flowing avalanche run-up and run-out
The prediction of run-up and run-out of dry-flowing avalanches is very important for land-use planning, design of run-out zone defenses and construction of risk maps in avalanche terrain. In this

Resumen en: The influence of El Nino/Southern Oscillation phenomenon (ENSO) on winter snow accumulation over the subtropical Andes in Central Chile is analyzed using...
