Upon the cessation of exponential growth, Bacillus subtilis enters a transition phase leading to either sporulation or a non-sporulating stationary phase. During this transition period, cells secrete degradative enzymes, become competent for DNA transformation, are motile and acquire resistance to oxidative killing.
