Elastases are matrix degrading enzymes involved tissue homeostasis and are mainly produced by epithelial cells in the skin, lungs and neutrophils. Neutrophil-derived elastases play a major role in the regulation of vascular injury and inflammation, such as ischemia-reperfusion injury.
