Polyoma viruses, such as BK virus or JC virus, rarely cause clinically apparent diseases in humans. Clinical evidence for disease is mostly encountered in immunocompromised hosts such as patients with AIDS or transplant recipients. The shedding of BK virus into the urinary system and hemorrhagic cystitis has also been described in other patients, for example, after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
