The binding of certain immunoglobulins ("cytophilic" antibodies) to receptors on the surface of macrophages probably plays a central role in a number of macrophage functions, such as antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (1-3), macrophage "arming" (4,5), and possibly in the presentation of antigens to T and B cells in the induction of various immune responses .
