Jaundice is a not infrequent complication of treatment with the arsphenamins. It may exist before treatment as the result of a syphilitic hepatitis: it may develop after the first treatment from a hepatic Herxheimer reaction. It may appear some weeks after a few injections and represent a hepatorecurrence, or it may develop later as a result of the toxic effect of the drug on the liver.
