Dusky dolphins were present in GQlfo San Jose, Chubut, Argentina, during most of the year, with a seasonal low in abundance during winter and a high in summer. The presence of the prey species southern anchovy, Engraulis anclwita, appeared to affect seasonal movements. Surface feeding was highly visible and birds also fed on fish schools which dolphins herded to the water surface. Surface feeding occurred mainly in spring and summer in the study area, and in late summer and fall in more oceanic…
Diurnal and seasonal variation in the behaviour of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Bahía San Antonio, Patagonia, Argentina
TLDR
Results of this study indicate the behavioural and social flexibility of bottlenose dolphins in BSA and suggest a link to the seasonal variations in prey availability.
Dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) feeding tactics and multi‐species associations
TLDR
Differences in Dolphin feeding tactics, multi‐species associations, and locations of feeding bouts were different from May through July than from August to November, suggesting that changes in prey species or behaviour influence dolphin feeding tactics and influence which species benefit from feeding with dolphins.
Ecology and behavior of the estuarine dolphin, Sotalia guianensis (Cetacea: Delphinidae) in Sepetiba Bay, South-eastern Brazil
The dynamics of habitat utilization by Sotalia guianensis has been investigated. Between January 1997 and May 1998, 145 h of direct observations were made from a fixed location at Ponta do Zumbi on
Behavior and seasonal variation in the relative abundance of Commerson’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) in northern Patagonia, Argentina
TLDR
Commerson’s dolphins along the Patagonian coast of South America suffer incidental mortality in fisheries and are the target of a dolphin-watching industry, suggesting that at higher SST the species forsakes the area, probably in favor of coastal areas to the south with lower SST.
Behaviour, habitat use and population size of Sotalia fluviatilis (Gervais, 1853) (Cetacea, Delphinidae) in the Cananéia estuary region, São Paulo, Brazil
TLDR
From fourteen behavioral patterns identified, travelling (46.8%) and feeding (33.9%) were the most frequently observed, and group size and composition differed in each behavioral pattern.
Diurnal Movements and Behaviour of Heaviside's Dolphins, Cephalorhynchus heavisidii, with some Comparative Data for Dusky Dolphins, Lagenothynchus obscutus
TLDR
The dissimilar responses to environmental conditions suggest that sympatry in these two species is mediated by niche as well as prey differentiation, which is potentially at risk from anthropogenic threats Including fisheries bycatch.
DUSKY DOLPHIN (LAGENORHYNCHUS OBSCURUS) FORAGING IN TWO DIFFERENT HABITATS: ACTIVE ACOUSTIC DETECTION OF DOLPHINS AND THEIR PREY
TLDR
Time, depth of layer, and layer variance contributed significantly to predicting foraging dusky dolphin subgroup size, and ecological differences between the deep waters of Kaikoura Canyon and the shallow nearshore waters of Admiralty Bay may result in differences in how, when, and in what social groupings dusky dolphins forage.
The Activity budget of free-ranging common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in the northwestern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
This study presents findings on seasonal and diurnal behavioural patterns of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis )o the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Data on the activity
Northernmost record of dusky dolphin Lagenorhynchus obscurus in coastal waters off northern Peru (4°S)
Dusky dolphin Lagenorhynchus obscurus is distributed primarily in cool coastal waters at several continental margins and island borders in the Southern Hemisphere. Off Peru, the northernmost record
Occurrence of dusky dolphin lagenorhynchus obscurus in Tierra Del Fuego archipelago over five decades
TLDR
The occurrence of dusky dolphins in Tierra del Fuego along 44 years is evaluated to better understand which lineage they belong to and their spatio-temporal movements in the area, suggesting at least, a seasonal resident population.
