Systemic administration of kainic acid (KA) at convulsant doses results in irreversible cell damage and neuron loss in the hilus of the dentate gyrus and in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. This is followed by reactive astrocytosis in these regions, and sprouting of mossy fibers into the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus.
