BARRED OWL HABITAT AND PREY: A REVIEW AND SYNTHESIS OF THE LITERATURE
@inproceedings{Livezey2007BARREDOH, title={BARRED OWL HABITAT AND PREY: A REVIEW AND SYNTHESIS OF THE LITERATURE}, author={Kent B. Livezey}, year={2007} }
ABSTRACT Barred Owls (Strix varia) historically inhabited the forests of eastern North America. During the last century, they expanded their range to include forests throughout the southern provinces of Canada, southeastern Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. To date, there has been no synthesis of the varied habitats or prey used by Barred Owls in their expanded range. Here I review and synthesize studies concerning habitat (N = 114) and prey (N = 43) of…

Barred Owl Space Use and Habitat Selection in the Eastern Cascades, Washington
- Environmental Science
- 2008
The resource selection function the authors developed for barred owls in the study area indicated that barred Owls used areas with the combination of low values for topographic position and slope and higher values for NDVI, solar insolation, and an interaction term for canopy closure and tree-crown diameter.

Habitats of Suburban Barred Owls (Strix varia) and Red-Shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) in Southwestern Ohio1
- Environmental Science

Habitat of suburban Barred Owls differed little from habitat of suburban Red-shouldered Hawks in southwestern Ohio, and values of land-cover percentages and metrics did not differ between the species.
Analysis of the Diets of the Northern Spotted Owl and Barred Owl

The purpose of this research paper is to review existing literature on the diets of the Northern Spotted Owl and Barred Owl individually as well as in areas in which they occur sympatrically. By…
An unexpected backyard hunter: breeding Barred Owls exhibit plasticity in habitat selection along a development gradient
- Environmental ScienceUrban Ecosystems

Despite extensive accounts in the literature describing Barred Owls ( Strix varia ) as obligate forest-interior species, Barred Owls have increasingly been observed in urbanized landscapes. To…
Killing Barred Owls to Help Spotted Owls II: Implications for Many Other Range-Expanding Species
- Environmental Science
- 2010
Information is presented concerning how frequently range expansions of North American birds and other factors may precipitate similar management issues in the near future, probability that range expansions will continue, increases in number of listed species, and further documentation of negative effects between species are presented.

Killing Barred Owls to Help Spotted Owls I: A Global Perspective
- Environmental Science
- 2010
A precedent-setting removal study in which as many as 2150 to 4650 Barred Owls would be killed would result in the death of 36 times more raptors than in all other conservation-based projects combined in the United States and its territories, and 84 times more Raptor deaths than in the largest ongoing effort worldwide.

This research implies that developed landscapes containing mature urban trees can support breeding populations of Barred Owls, and modeled Barred Owl occupancy probability along a development gradient in the Piedmont region of the southeastern United States.

The barred owl typically nests in old stick nests constructed by hawks, crows, or squirrels, but also in tree cavities, and natural pipes are fairly common in the Carrizo sandstones of eastern Texas, and are formed by the action of water seeping vertically down sand layers within the hill until it hits an impermeable layer of clay.
