Anoxic and metabolic stresses in large-scale cell culture during biopharmaceutical production can induce apoptosis. Strategies designed to ameliorate the problem of apoptosis in cell culture have focused on mRNA knockdown of pro-apoptotic proteins and over-expression of anti-apoptotic ones.
