Under normal physiological condition, the mature vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) show differentiated phenotype. In response to various environmental stimuluses, VSMCs convert from the differentiated phenotype to dedifferentiated phenotype characterized by the increased ability of proliferation/migration and the reduction of contractile ability. The phenotypic transformation of VSMCs played an important role in atherosclerosis. Both Bcl-2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) and tumor necrosis… Expand

KLOTHO DEFICIENCY PROMOTES THE PROLIFERATION AND MIGRATION OF HUMAN AORTIC VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS BY ACTIVATING THE WNT/Β-CATENIN SIGNALING PATHWAY
Objective: Arterial stiffness is a component of arterial aging and might be related to decreased expression of Klotho. We performed Klotho RNA interference in human aortic vascular smooth muscleExpand
Extreme Diversity of the Human Vascular Mesenchymal Cell Landscape
TLDR
A systematic evaluation shows a highly diverse and dynamic landscape for the human vascular mesenchymal cell population that is not captured by the classic nomenclature, and stresses the need for a consensus multiparameter subclass designation along the lines of the cluster of differentiation classification for leucocytes. PDGF-mediated autophagy regulates vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype and resistance to oxidative stress.
TLDR
A distinct form of autophagy induced by PDGF that is essential for attaining the synthetic phenotype and for survival under the conditions of high oxidative stress found to occur in vascular lesions is demonstrated. Expand
Advanced glycation end products promote proliferation and suppress autophagy via reduction of Cathepsin D in rat vascular smooth muscle cells
TLDR
AGEs promote proliferation of VSMCs and suppress autophagy, at least in part via CatD reduction, as well as the potential underlying mechanisms. Expand
Atorvastatin Calcium Inhibits Phenotypic Modulation of PDGF-BB-Induced VSMCs via Down-Regulation the Akt Signaling Pathway
TLDR
Atorvastatin calcium inhibits phenotype modulation of PDGF-BB-induced VSMCs and activation of the Akt signaling pathway, indicating that Akt might play a vital role in the modulation of phenotype. Expand
Knockdown of BAG3 induces epithelial–mesenchymal transition in thyroid cancer cells through ZEB1 activation
The process by which epithelial features are lost in favor of a mesenchymal phenotype is referred to as epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Most carcinomas use this mechanism to evade intoExpand

TLDR
Current knowledge of the regulation of SMC differentiation is summarized, with a particular emphasis on consideration of how this process is controlled during normal vascular development and how these control processes might be altered in vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, which are characterized by marked alterations in the differentiated state of the SMC. TLDR
The focus of this review is to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in controlling phenotypic switching of SMCs, with particular focus on examination of signaling pathway that regulate this process. Expand

TLDR
Current knowledge in vascular smooth muscle cell phenotypic modulation is summarized and some of the key unresolved challenges and questions requiring further study are identified. Expand
Atorvastatin inhibits the apoptosis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by angiotensin II via the lysosomal-mitochondrial axis
TLDR
The data strongly suggested that Ang II induced apoptosis through the lysosomal-mitochondrial axis in HUVECs through the protective effect of atorvastatin was significantly greater than pharmacological or genetic inhibition of CTSD. Expand
Role of smooth muscle cells in the initiation and early progression of atherosclerosis.
TLDR
The initiation of atherosclerosis results from complex interactions of circulating factors and various cell types in the vessel wall, including endothelial cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and smooth muscle cells (SMCs), which contribute to the initiation and propagation of the inflammatory response to lipid.
