Background: Leptin is expressed in human placenta acting as an autocrine signal for the trophoblast. In fact, leptin is now considered an important regulatory signal in fetoplacental physiology. Placenta leptin expression is increased in pathological pregnancies, such as gestational diabetes, and it may play a role in the overgrowth of placenta, which supplies a growing fetus with nutrients and water.
