Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a key player in peripheral nerve injury. In the inflammatory chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of sciatic neuropathy, upregulation of TNF-alpha mRNA and protein at the site of nerve injury has been associated with pain.
