We study the parameter space of cold dark matter axions in two cosmological scenarios with nonstandard thermal histories before big bang nucleosynthesis: the low-temperature reheating (LTR) cosmology and the kination cosmology. If the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaks during inflation, we find more allowed parameter space in the LTR cosmology than in the standard cosmology and less in the kination cosmology. On the contrary, if the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaks after inflation, the Peccei-Quinn scale… Expand

New opportunities for axion dark matter searches in nonstandard cosmological models
We study axion dark matter production from a misalignment mechanism in scenarios featuring a general nonstandard cosmology. Before the onset of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the energy density of theExpand
Relic Density of Axion Dark Matter in Standard and Non-Standard Cosmological Scenarios
The axion is an hypothetical particle that has become a very serious candidate to explain the nature of cold dark matter. So far, no signal of axions has been found. Nonetheless, only someExpand
Axion dark matter in the time of primordial black holes
We investigate the production of QCD axion dark matter in a nonstandard cosmological era triggered by primordial black holes (PBHs) that fully evaporate before the onset of BBN. Even if PBHs cannotExpand
Axion global fits with Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking before inflation using GAMBIT
A bstractWe present global fits of cosmologically stable axion-like particle and QCD axion models in the mass range 0.1 neV to 10 eV. We focus on the case where the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is brokenExpand
Imprints of the early Universe on axion dark matter substructure
Despite considerable experimental progress large parts of the axion-like particle (ALP) parameter space remain difficult to probe in terrestrial experiments. In some cases, however, small-scaleExpand
Reheating Effects in the Matter Power Spectrum and Implications for Substructure
The thermal and expansion history of the Universe before big bang nucleosynthesis is unknown. We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations through the transition from an early matterExpand
Can QCD axion stars explain Subaru HSC microlensing?
A non-negligible fraction of the QCD axion dark matter may form gravitationally bound Bose Einstein condensates, which are commonly known as axion stars or axion clumps. Such astrophysical objectsExpand
Axion cosmology with early matter domination
The default assumption of early universe cosmology is that the postinflationary universe was radiation dominated until it was about 47000 years old. Direct evidence for the radiation dominated epochExpand
Dark matter targets for axionlike particle searches
Many existing and proposed experiments targeting QCD axion dark matter (DM) can also search for a broad class of axionlike particles (ALPs). We analyze the experimental sensitivities toExpand
Dark matter production in the early Universe: beyond the thermal WIMP paradigm
Increasingly stringent limits from LHC searches for new physics, coupled with lack of convincing signals of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) in dark matter searches, have tightlyExpand

Inflationary cosmology connecting dark energy and dark matter
Kination dominated quintessence models of dark energy have the intriguing feature that the relic abundance of thermal cold dark matter can be significantly enhanced compared to the predictions fromExpand
On the origin of dark matter axions
We discuss the possible sources of dark matter axions in the early universe. In the standard thermal scenario, an axion string network forms at the Peccei-Quinn phase transition T∼fa and thenExpand
Axion cosmology and the energy scale of inflation
We survey observational constraints on the parameter space of inflation and axions and map out two allowed windows: the classic window and the inflationary anthropic window. The cosmology of theExpand
Axion Constraints in Non-standard Thermal Histories
It is usually assumed that dark matter is produced during the radiation-dominated era. There is, however, no direct evidence for radiation domination prior to big-bang nucleosynthesis. TwoExpand
Dark matter axions revisited
We study for what specific values of the theoretical parameters the axion can form the totality of cold dark matter. We examine the allowed axion parameter region in the light of recent dataExpand

The cosmological properties of axions are reviewed .W e discuss the axions produced by thermal processes in the early universe, the evolution of the av- erage axion field between the Peccei-Quinn andExpand
Mainly axion cold dark matter in the minimal supergravity model
We examine the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model under the assumption that the strong CP problem is solved by the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. In this case, the relic dark matter (DM) abundance consistsExpand
Quintessential kination and cold dark matter abundance
The generation of a kination-dominated phase by a quintessential exponential model is investigated and the parameters of the model are restricted so that a number of observational constraintsExpand
Quintessence and the relic density of neutralinos
Abstract The archetypal model for the recently discovered dark energy component of the universe is based on the existence of a scalar field whose dynamical evolution comes down today to aExpand
Largest temperature of the radiation era and its cosmological implications
The thermal history of the universe before the epoch of nucleosynthesis is unknown. The maximum temperature in the radiation-dominated era, which we will refer to as the reheat temperature, may haveExpand
