Axions comprise a broad class of particles that can play a major role in explaining the unknown aspects of cosmology. They are also well-motivated within high energy physics, appearing in theories related to CP -violation in the standard model, supersymmetric theories, and theories with extra-dimensions, including string theory, and so axion cosmology offers us a unique view onto these theories. I review the motivation and models for axions in particle physics and string theory. I then present… Expand
Axion structure formation – I: the co-motion picture
Axions as dark matter is an increasingly important subject in astrophysics and cosmology. Experimental and observational searches are mounting across the mass spectrum of axion-like particles, manyExpand
Parametric-resonance based phenomenology of gravitating axion configurations
One of the most compelling candidates for Dark Matter (DM) are light pseudo-scalar particles (axions), motivated by the strong CP problem and axiverse scenario in string theory. Depending on theirExpand
Cosmological Implications of Axion-Matter Couplings
Axions and other light particles appear ubiquitously in physics beyond the Standard Model, with a variety of possible couplings to ordinary matter. Cosmology offers a unique probe of these particlesExpand
Precision axion physics with running axion couplings
Abstract We study the renormalization group running of axion couplings while taking into account that the Standard Model can be extended to its supersymmetric extension at a certain energy scaleExpand
A viable QCD axion in the MeV mass range
A bstractThe QCD axion is one of the most compelling solutions of the strong CP problem. There are major current efforts into searching for an ultralight, invisible axion, which is believed to be theExpand
Axion configurations around pulsars
Axion-like particles lead to a plethora of new phenomena relating to compact astrophysical objects including stellar and black hole superradiance, axion stars and axion clusters. In this work, weExpand
Formation of relativistic axion stars
Axions and axion-like particles are compelling candidates for the missing dark matter of the universe. As they undergo gravitational collapse, they can form compact objects such as axion stars orExpand
Axial Anomaly in Galaxies and the Dark Universe
Motivated by the SU(2)CMB modification of the cosmological model ΛCDM, we consider isolated fuzzy-dark-matter lumps, made of ultralight axion particles whose masses arise due to distinct SU(2)Expand
Large-misalignment mechanism for the formation of compact axion structures: Signatures from the QCD axion to fuzzy dark matter
Axions are some of the best motivated particles beyond the Standard Model. We show how the attractive self-interactions of dark matter (DM) axions over a broad range of masses, from $10^{-22}$ eV toExpand
CP violation in QCD, axions and possible connections to dark matter
The strong CP problem and its solution are treated on the undergraduate level. We first review the theoretical background of symmetry and symmetry breaking in particle physics. The Goldstone model isExpand
