  • For over a hundred years, mimicry opponents have pointed to the lack of adequate field data for bird predation on insects involved in mimicry complexes. Valiant deductions (Carpenter and Ford 1933; Cott 1940; Edmunds 1974) and considerable field data (Endler 1986) have largely refuted this criticism, but some investigators continue to maintain that mimicry is a figment of the imagination (e.g., Urquhart 1960, 1987).
