With the advent of multi-drug therapy (MDT), the National Leprosy Control Programme (NLCP) of the Government of India was re-designated as a National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) in the year 1983. In the early 1990s, the NLEP adopted the goal of elimination of leprosy by the year 2000 (the goal has now shifted to December 2005).
