Oxygen consumption is used to study the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) utilization by bacteria. Preliminary incubation experiments examining oxygen consumption and bacterial growth demonstrated that a small labile fraction of the total DOC pool typically supports bacterial metabolism.
