Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the autotrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton in the Baltic Sea. The introduction of the concept of a size-structured plankton food web greatly stimulated studies of aquatic microbial ecology in earlier times. The Baltic Sea is a large brackish water basin with limited connection to the North Sea from the southwestern end.
